The hard drive (80gb) that was to be an integral part of the PS3 was earlier shot down by Sony and now will be offered only as an add-on, which by all estimates would run about $95. Now the router aspect is gone:
"Sony exec tells Nikkei Electronics that the next-gen console won't be a hub; exclusion aims to make machine more affordable. When Sony introduced the PlayStation 3 at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the company touted the unit as being a multimedia device that was designed to be at the heart of household entertainment centers. The PS3 was to be an all-in-one unit, capable of entertaining gamers, appeasing audiophiles, and replacing outdated equipment with its multiple functions.
One piece of equipment that was destined to be binned by the PS3's versatility was the home Internet router. Three Ethernet ports on the PS3 were originally designed to help the PS3 function as a broadband router, letting other devices hook up to the PS3 as though it were a hub.
However, according to multiple reports across the Internet, it's the router functionality of the PS3 that's in the trash. With speculation that the PS3 could be one of the most expensive home consoles ever, in addition to stiff competition from the cheaper Xbox 360 from Microsoft, Ken Kutaragi reportedly told the publication Nikkei Electronics that all router capabilities for the PS3 have been nixed to make the unit more cost-friendly.
It's unclear at the time whether the actual architecture of the console will change at all. Conceivably, the number of Ethernet ports could be reduced now that the console won't be used as a router. But in the past, Sony has implied that there may be plans for the spare Ethernet ports.

The expected price in America is still projected by Wall Street analysis to be near $399.

Yea, 400 is steep. I would think the most they can place it on the market is 330 right at luanch, problem is a lot of people will buy XBox 360 first, and will wait on PS3, which will help reduce the price.

My PS2 is worth about $300 now. I put in a 180GB harddrive and can burn games using a disc program called HD advance 2.0. I just burned the new NCAA 2006...real nice. The only con is that you can't play games online, unless you own the game.

Friend of mine wants $200 for his XBox and it comes with $30 games, I told him not to hold his breath, but hey, what do I know ... my biggest thing is the middle class guy with a family may have a bit of a problem dropping $300 so he can play games when theres tons of other bills that need to be paid ...

I also heard that the games on the enxt generation will run aorund 60-70$ per game. This will be expensive, but I will probably buy both systems this time around, since Xbox is coming out first. I would choose PS3 over Xbox, but their launch dates are different. So I guess I have to buy both!!!

believe it or not some years ago (maybe 15 to 20 the games went to $50 to $75, nobody bought them and the price came back down ... the people have their limits and if you push to hard they turn you off

We can always boycott PS3 stuff. They have to bring the prices down. My wife barely lets me get any new games now (one reason I bought a harddrive for PS2 w/HD advance 2.0), so I rent the ones I would like (except SOCOM and Madden) and burn em. Having two kids and one in the oven now, PLEASE! $300 is too much for me. I'll just sit back and enjoy the good ole PS2.

I don't care how much the Mods on the various Madden sites pump out the hype about "better graphics" and the "machine runs smoother," I will not buy the Xbox. That very same message has been touted in the past, and even more so now that the Madden tourney moved to the Xbox for this coming season.
I think that certain Mods, mainly MM, MN, MP, VG, IGN, and the rest, etc., are trying to create an elite Madden community from their chosen ranks, and wish for their servants to be on the Xbox, mainly because online there are, in their opinion, less "kids" of the fabled East Room online, due in-part to the fact that you have to pay the annual $50 to play online. Is that a good enough reason to buy the Xbox? For me it isn't.
1)Most of us when we play online don't mess with playing the "kids" online anyway. 2)Mrs. PTR and I run an empty nest here so we don't have the deserved caring and expense of educating kids like some of you, but I certainly can relate to what you that do are incurring this day in age, so I would venture to guess that that door is closed to you as well.
So, the elite Xbox community that I talked about above would, therefore, leave a lot of players behind. I see it happening, especially at IGN, MM, MN. MP, and VG, where not-in-the-too distant future, the only way that you will be able to be a full member of either of those sites is to make a "mandatory" donation, and then to remain a member on some, you must exhibit a very active forum and online presence. If not, then you will have only limited access to site areas.
I rarely go to the ESPN site anymore because most everything there is limited to free viewing. Damn! Don't those guys make enough money with the network that they can't provide a free site anymore?
Do Madden sites have a right to solicit donations to support a site? Absolutely. And I have donated. But I think that once the ranks are thinned, you will see some of the major Madden sites possibly merge, like MN, VG and MM. They way they are starting to interact with each other of late leads me to believe this. Used to be that the mentioning of another site in a forum was enough to get you banned, now the Mods openly mention Mods who they regularly associate with. And a merger of some them may not totally be a bad idea, as long as the idea doesn't lead to eliminating the two groups of players mentioned above, the "kids" and "kids" parents trying to make it a better place to live.
At MN, it has already started; you must pay for certain information.
At MM of late, you are told that you "must" adopt a name that has the MM in front of it, and if the name doesn't fit online (12 letters or numbers), you "must change it to something that is approved by MM; and you "must" be an active member on the forum and online to remain in their hallowed presence. If you do not post in the forum, your name is removed from the members' list. Since my name did not fit with the MM, I was told that that the only choice I had was what they wanted me to have and that was MMPoundrock. After three years a member, I wanted to be active this year thinking maybe the learning curve would be lessened, but now I am having reservations as to even wanting to be a part of this so-called "elite" community. The Mods have become very condescending to all except a few of their "elite" members. Reminds me of high school "cliches." The "must pay" for additional info will soon follow. And I will leave.
Couple this with the Mods touting the Xbox, Xbox pay online, and the great "conciliator-zation" of the site Mods, and I can see a come-together that would squeeze anyone except the deep pockets.
And there are rumors that in the not-too-distant future, you will also have to pay to go online with the PSx, possibly as early as the PS3. However, I don't see an annual $50 price tag for that.
Where does that leave us, the anti "don't ask me for more blood money" players, parents, and the young kid, the kid wanting to play Madden in his living room, instead of being in the street vulnerable to the ills of society? Very much out of that elite community. And you know, sometimes it's those same little kids that keep their forums active all year, not just when a new Madden is about to come out. I would say be careful what you ask for, because it just might come back to bite you in the ass!
I don't know how much longer I will play Madden because my later years dictate that ending, and besides, my skill level has reached its' Madden pinnacle as well.
I won't buy the Xbox. I will, however, if the good Lord is willing, buy the PS3, and realizing that the cost of ALL goods rise, will buy the game. But if it comes to having to pay a particular site just to read someone else's opinion, then it's time for me to move on. I have already cut EA premium pass off; I will not renew IGN Insider. Since VG still has some information that can be used in our league, I will continue there, but the info is less and less. I'm sure that it won't be too long before they will be just an extended arm of EA in association with MN and I will drop that too. Anyway, 90% or more of the info garnered there can't be used in our league, thanks to the Commish. Not that I would want to, mind you.
This industry has really exploded and the market will take us where we want it to go because we spend the money. And the only way to dictate to industry is "don't buy the damn (Xbox) product." Save the money, unless you have deep pockets, and wait for the PS3. From what I have read and heard, the PS3 will blow the Xbox out of the water.
Just my opinion.

Good points PTR. I will have to see what games are on the launch that would pursuade me to buy this. I can wait 3 months for PS3 if that is the case.

Good points PTR. Very insightful.
I`m with Tony. The games that launch with the PS3 will determine whether I will buy it. I didn`t buy the PS2 for well over a year when it first hit and I only bought it because of the Grand Theft Auto game.
