Game Pro 08/03/05
08/03/05 The original PlayStation 3 launch specs had the next-generation system slated with a 1X (36 Mbps) Blu-ray drive, but with first-generation Blu-ray drives already clocked in at the 2X (72 Mbps) speed, it is likely that Sony may opt to go for a faster format. Price will certainly be the deciding factor for a speed boost, as the last thing Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi wants to do is increase hardware costs for the already pricey console.
With Microsoft alluding to the possibility of implementing Toshiba's HD-DVD format into the Xbox 360, SCE may want to go with the fastest Blu-ray format available near the PS3 launch period.
Wedbush Morgan Securities, is a top name in financial planning, sales, and trading. But it's their recent revelations about Sony's PlayStation 3 that may catapult them to mainstream recognition. In a memo to EA investors, Michael Pachter--a senior analyst with Wedbush Morgan--predicted that Sony will strive to avoid upsetting fans and retail stores by repeating the kinds of hardware shortages that marked the PS2's tumultuous 1999 launch, as well as the shortages that hurt its 2004 holiday season.
Pachter posits that Sony will try to chip into the Xbox 360's launch by dropping the PS2 to a mass market-friendly price of $99. If the Xbox 360 gets off to a slow start, Sony will ultimately hold off on launching the PS3 until 2007. But if the Xbox 360 racks up major sales, Sony will be compelled to rush production of the PS3 to slow the Xbox 360's lead.
Sure, it's speculation, but it's analyst speculation.
Sony's next-generation system is a graphical powerhouse, featuring 1080p support and a whole slew of graphical effects that have only begun to be implemented in high-end PCs. Wi-Fi capable, the console can connect up to seven wireless controllers via Bluetooth.

Further PS3 News: Sony has launched its official PlayStation 3 site, but it has raised further questions about its next generation console. The website only features a picture, and a paragraph of text: "PlayStation 3 will change the nature of gaming and entertainment forever. Its CELL technology is the digital soul and delivers the powerhouse, supercomputer-like processing power, unknown to today's machines. Blu-ray Disc ROM (BD-ROM) is the graphical heart that will provide entertainment content in full high-definition (HD) quality. It's a console that screams digital carpe diem and will redefine reality as you know it." An interesting paragraph designed to hype up the PlayStation 3 in the run up to Sony's pre-E3 Conference, which takes place on Monday at 4pm PDT (7pm EDT)However, it's the image that is far more interesting. The PlayStation 3 logo appears in its standard silver, Spider-Man font, but the console itself is totally blacked out. Although the general shape of the console seems to be the same as we've seen since E3 last year, the fact that they've totally disguised the console in a black smog raises questions about whether the console's design has changed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With E3 coming up (May 8th), the infamous game developer Electronic Arts is set to show the newest games hitting all platforms this year, including a playable version of Madden NFL '07 for the PS3. (Avail also Nov. of '07 at game launch) However it is said that we may not see Command and Conquer 3 or Spore at E3 interms of being shown to public, that they will be only shown to few and behind closed doors. Also, Frank Gibeau, EA Exectutive Vice President mentioned that," EA is demonstrating a ground-breaking level of quality and innovation at E3 this year...Games like ARMY OF TWO and NBA LIVE 07 are going to unleash the power of new consoles like PlayStation3 and Xbox 360. Madden NFL 07 makes great use of the new controller on Nintendo's Wii system." It willl be intresting to see if we can see a difference between the PS3 version and Xbox360 version of games, and whether the two consoles handle gameplay the same way in titles like Madden '07.
